The Fiji Police Force is currently investigating nearly 650 cases of scams, signaling a concerning upsurge in cybercrime within the region. Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, made this disclosure at the Regional Workshop for the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) held at Shangri-La Yanuca Island in Nadroga.

During his address, Mr. Turaga highlighted a particularly troubling case involving a young woman from the Western Division who became a victim of a cyber extortion scheme, losing around half a million dollars to an online scammer. The scam involved threats to release her intimate images online, demonstrating the severe risks of cybercrime in the Pacific nation.

The Minister recounted that the victim believed she was communicating with someone outside of Fiji, but the scammer was actually operating locally. Throughout several months, the victim was manipulated into paying a ransom in hopes of preventing the release of her photos.

“This type of crime knows no borders, affecting many around the globe, particularly women who are often seeking companionship or trust online,” Mr. Turaga stated. He also mentioned a fraudulent M-Paisa transaction linked to counterfeit eBay listings for equipment, which has defrauded victims of over $600,000.

In response to these growing threats, the Minister assured that the government is working on improving the legal framework and enhancing the capabilities within agencies to combat cybercrime. Collaborating with international partners, the ODPP is prioritizing capacity building, training, and sharing knowledge to better address and manage cybercrime cases. This includes equipping officials with the skills to gather and present electronic evidence in court and understand complex cybercrime legislation.

Mr. Turaga emphasized the importance of staying ahead in the fight against evolving crime patterns, indicating a proactive commitment to safeguarding the public from these threats.

In summary, Fiji’s government and law enforcement are taking significant steps to address the alarming rise in cybercrime through enhanced training and legal frameworks, showcasing determination to protect its citizens from such exploits. This commitment, coupled with increasing public awareness, can lead to a more resilient and educated community that is better equipped to navigate the digital landscape safely.
