Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua, also known as Joe Lovodua, expressed hope that representatives of the Vodafone Fiji Bati can serve as positive role models for children in Fiji, particularly in light of increased drug use cases in the country. The 26-year-old is making his return to the national team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to injury.
Hailing from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, and with maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri, Lovodua shared that the highlight of returning to Fiji after more than six years has been reuniting with family members. He praised the team’s community programs, particularly the visits that allow players to connect with relatives.
“The best thing is just seeing all the people and putting a smile on everyone’s face,” Lovodua remarked. He acknowledged the challenges stemming from drug issues but emphasized their desire to be positive influences for the youth looking up to them.
Lovodua expressed gratitude for being back in the Fiji Bati camp, noting the promising future of the team, especially with many younger players in the lineup. He aspires to be selected for the next World Cup, stating that competing at that level has always been a personal goal.
“It’s always an ambition and goal of mine to be available to be selected in the World Cup team,” he said. “We always do so well in the World Cup; we’re often underestimated compared to other nations. The board and the team aim for higher goals, wanting to reach the finals rather than merely participating. We want to continue improving.”
Regarding the upcoming match against the Cook Islands Aitu, Lovodua acknowledged the strength of their opponents, highlighting the pride and passion each team has for their nation. He believes that the players have learned valuable lessons from their previous match against Papua New Guinea and expects a strong performance in their next training session to correct any mistakes.
Currently, Lovodua plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
