Fiji Bati’s Joe Lovodua: A Beacon of Hope Amid Drug Crisis

Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua aims to inspire children in Fiji as drug use cases increase, emphasizing the responsibility of the Vodafone Fiji Bati representatives as role models. Known as Joe Lovodua, the 26-year-old is making his comeback to the national team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to injury.

Hailing from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, and connected to Naivucini in Naitasiri through his mother, Lovodua expressed joy about reuniting with family after being away for over six years. He praised the team’s community engagement efforts, particularly the visits that allow them to connect with their relatives in person.

“The best part is seeing everyone and bringing a smile to their faces,” he stated. He acknowledged the challenging times in Fiji related to rising drug issues, emphasizing their aim to serve as positive role models for the youth.

Lovodua expressed excitement about rejoining the Fiji Bati camp after a long absence. With several younger players in the squad, he believes the future looks bright for the team and is thankful for his selection.

He expressed his ambition to be part of the next World Cup team, stating, “It has always been my goal to be available for selection in the World Cup. We consistently perform well at the World Cup, often being underestimated by other nations. The team is focused on aiming higher and making it to the finals rather than just participating.”

When reflecting on the upcoming match against the Cook Islands Aitu, Lovodua highlighted the competitive spirit of both teams. “There’s a lot of pride and passion in the game, and each team wants to perform their best for their country. We take pride in our heritage and where we come from,” he noted.

He feels the team has learned valuable lessons from their previous game against Papua New Guinea and looks forward to rectifying those mistakes in upcoming training sessions. Currently, Lovodua plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
