The Vodafone Fiji Bati are set to face the Cook Islands Aitu tonight, with a victory being vital for their aspirations to qualify for the 2026 Rugby League World Cup. The Bati’s chances took a hit last Saturday when they lost to the Papua New Guinea Kumuls, who secured a 22-10 win in Suva at the HFC Bank Stadium.
Head coach Wise Kativerata underscored the importance of tonight’s match, stating, “It’s important, very important, not only to the Bati but to the Fiji Rugby League as we are building towards the World Cup.” He noted that while the scoreline against the Kumuls was significant, it was not the only measure of their performance. Kativerata pointed out that the team needs to focus on fundamental aspects of their play that were exploited by the Kumuls.
In addition, the Bati’s path to World Cup qualification remains feasible, as they could still secure a spot if the Cook Islands manage to defeat the Kumuls in Port Moresby next month, regardless of the outcome of tonight’s game. The match between the Bati and the Cooks is scheduled for 8:10 PM at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
