Josaia Naulumatua Lovodua, commonly known as Joe Lovodua, expresses his hope that the Vodafone Fiji Bati players will serve as positive role models for children in Fiji, especially as drug use cases rise in the country. The 26-year-old is excited to return to the team after missing the 2021 Rugby League World Cup due to injury.
Lovodua, who hails from Vabea, Ono, Kadavu, and has maternal ties to Naivucini in Naitasiri, shared that being back in Fiji after more than six years has allowed him to reconnect with family. He praised the team’s community programs and the opportunity to meet relatives in person.
“The best thing is just seeing all the people and putting a smile on everyone’s face,” he stated. He acknowledged the challenging times Fiji is facing with drug-related issues but emphasized their desire to be a positive influence for the youth.
Lovodua is optimistic about the future of the Fiji Bati, particularly with the inclusion of younger players in the squad, and he is thankful to be part of it. He aims to secure a spot in the next World Cup team, expressing, “It’s always an ambition and goal of mine to be available to be selected in the World Cup team.”
He pointed out that Fiji historically performs well in World Cups, often being underestimated by other nations. According to Lovodua, the team’s objective is to aim for the finals and improve continually.
Regarding their upcoming match against the Cook Islands Aitu, he stated that they are a tough opponent. “There’s a lot of pride and passion in the game, so each side wants to play their best footy for their nation,” he said, highlighting their dedication to representing their heritage.
Lovodua also noted that the team has learned valuable lessons from their prior game against Papua New Guinea and is focused on correcting their mistakes with further training sessions. Currently, he plays for the Doncaster rugby league club in England.
