Fiji Bati Faces Must-Win Clash Against Cook Islands!

The Vodafone Fiji Bati rugby league team faces a critical match against the Cook Islands this Saturday, needing a win to advance to the promotion-relegation match. This urgency comes after their recent defeat to the Papua New Guinea Kumuls, who triumphed 22-10 at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva last Saturday night.

The victor of the Pacific Bowl Championship will play against the third-ranked team from the Pacific Cup, with the ultimate winner earning a spot in the Cup championship next season.

Bati head coach Waisake Kativerata acknowledged that his players did not execute their game plan effectively. The Kumuls took control early, leading 16-0 at halftime. Kativerata pointed out that the team made critical mistakes, including four consecutive seven-tackle sets, which significantly impacted the game’s outcome.

“We didn’t play to our standard,” he said. “When you play against a team like Papua New Guinea, you can’t afford to give them such advantages. They had already played a game the week prior, so they were more prepared.”

Despite creating opportunities, the Bati struggled to capitalize, often making errors in their passing and failing to complete their sets, particularly in their kicking game.

Looking ahead, Kativerata has shifted his focus to preparing for the upcoming match against the Aitu men. “We have a lot to work on and need to regroup quickly, as we only have one week until our next game,” he stated. He also acknowledged the strength of the opposition, noting their players’ experience in various NRL clubs.

The coaching staff includes experienced figures like John Sutton from the Rabbitohs and Jarryd Hayne, who are working together to formulate a strategy for the match.

Kativerata praised the forwards for their resilience in the recent loss, indicating that the team is committed to improving before their next challenge.
