The Fiji Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission has expressed strong support for the Government’s recent decision to prohibit the use of Ferris wheels for public entertainment. This measure comes in response to a series of accidents that have occurred throughout Fiji, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
Pravesh Sharma, the chair of the Commission, emphasized the necessity for all parties involved—including the Government—to prioritize public safety and demand that entertainment providers adhere to stringent accountability measures. “It is essential for the relevant bodies to conduct detailed investigations and establish comprehensive safety protocols for all entertainment activities in the nation,” Sharma stated.
He pointed out that ensuring public safety should be the foremost priority to prevent any recurrence of similar accidents. The Commission expressed its solidarity with the victims and their families affected by the Ferris wheel incidents, calling on authorities to make the outcomes of the investigation regarding the tragic 2023 accident public.
Furthermore, Sharma urged that those accountable for the accidents should face justice, and that families impacted by these incidents should receive appropriate compensation.
In summary, this decision reflects a commendable determination by the Fijian Government and the Human Rights Commission to safeguard public welfare. By implementing stricter regulations and emphasizing safety, there is a hopeful outlook for a more secure entertainment environment in Fiji, which ultimately benefits the community as a whole. Prioritizing safety can lead to renewed trust in public festivities and a more enjoyable experience for all attendees.
