The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) is urging Fiji to swiftly ratify the Marine Biodiversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ) Agreement. IUCN Environmental Legal Officer Frances Disiga stresses the importance of this timely action for Fiji not only as an environmental steward but also as a significant player in global ocean governance.
Disiga points out that the BBNJ Agreement will enhance Fiji’s ability to safeguard its critical marine resources. Benefits from the agreement can include access to marine genetic resources, increased scientific collaboration, technology transfer, and opportunities for capacity building. These provisions could enable Fijian institutions to participate actively in global marine biotechnology research, opening pathways for new economic opportunities.
The IUCN has committed to supporting Fiji throughout the ratification and implementation processes of the BBNJ Agreement, offering legal and technical expertise to bolster the country’s efforts in marine conservation. A report detailing the next steps in this initiative is expected to be presented in the upcoming session of Parliament.
This call to action follows the growing momentum among Pacific nations to ratify the BBNJ Agreement. Regional efforts have been highlighted by neighboring countries, such as Samoa, which recently hosted a national workshop to clarify stakeholder roles in implementing the treaty’s mandates. The collective commitment showcased by Pacific nations reveals a hopeful outlook toward sustainable ocean governance and emphasizes the need to protect vital marine ecosystems in the face of climate change and biodiversity loss.
As Fiji moves forward with its decision, the potential for inspiring regional collaboration and achieving better management of ocean resources remains strong, paving the way for healthier marine environments essential for local communities while ensuring sustainable practices for future generations.
