Fiji Appoints New Ambassador to Japan Amid Controversy

Peter Wise, the former permanent secretary of the Prime Minister’s Office, has been named as Fiji’s upcoming Ambassador to Japan, as announced by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. Wise will succeed Filimone Waqabaca, who is expected to return to Fiji to lead the Fiji Development Bank.

Wise resigned from his position as permanent secretary on September 25 for personal reasons. However, Prime Minister Rabuka revealed that a sexual harassment complaint against Wise had been received by his office, which was forwarded to the Public Service Commission. Rabuka mentioned that Wise was made aware of this issue prior to his resignation.

Having served as permanent secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office since January 2023, Wise has held similar positions in previous governments.
