Fiji and Yunnan: A Partnership in the Making?

In Wenshan, the capital of Yunnan Province, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka held an official meeting with Governor Wang Yubo. During their discussions, they explored areas of potential collaboration that would benefit both Yunnan and Fiji.

Prime Minister Rabuka expressed gratitude to the Fijian delegation for the warm hospitality received throughout their visit. He remarked on Yunnan Province’s exemplary resilience and economic progress, praising its notable achievements. Rabuka highlighted the province as a valuable resource for Fiji, particularly in advanced agricultural practices, sustainable development, infrastructure, and tourism.

He noted that Yunnan, being one of China’s fastest-developing provinces with rich natural resources and diverse flora, offers significant opportunities for development partnerships with Fiji. Rabuka underscored the importance of enhancing political, social, and personal connections while expressing interest in collaborative projects in education and other fields of mutual interest.

The Prime Minister also endorsed the five guiding principles set forth by the People’s Republic of China, which emphasize non-aggression, equality and mutual benefit, non-interference in internal matters, and peaceful coexistence.

In response, Governor Wang Yubo expressed appreciation for the meeting and reaffirmed Yunnan’s support for Fiji’s development initiatives. He assured Prime Minister Rabuka of Yunnan’s readiness to enhance trade and investment, promote people-to-people connections, combat drug issues, advance poverty alleviation programs, and improve higher education.

The meeting marked a proactive step forward in fostering collaboration between Yunnan Province and Fiji.
