The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, announced plans for Fiji to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur as part of the country’s 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day celebrations. This initiative aims to bolster bilateral relations and boost trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia.

Ms. Qereqeretabua stated that the High Commission in Kuala Lumpur will reopen soon, although she did not disclose a specific timeline. She emphasized that Kuala Lumpur will serve as a key hub for trade following the reopening.

She offered congratulations to the government and people of Malaysia on their national day, reflecting on the longstanding relationship between the two nations, which includes assistance provided by Fiji during Malaysia’s challenging periods.

She also referred to the term “Bula Maleya,” highlighted by the Malaysian High Commissioner during his remarks, which underscores their historical partnership. She expressed optimism about learning from Malaysia’s development as the relationship remains strong and healthy.

Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, the High Commissioner of Malaysia to Fiji, noted the alignment between Malaysia’s “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka” initiative and Fiji’s commitment to unity and sustainability. The Malaysia Madani concept is a policy introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, focusing on values such as sustainability, prosperity, and compassion.

Mr. Idrus mentioned that the ties between the two countries date back to the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency when Fijians showed great bravery. He emphasized that these historical ties laid a strong foundation for ongoing relations.

He highlighted Malaysia’s open economy and its status as one of Fiji’s top trading partners, reflecting the strength of their economic relationship. Mr. Idrus praised the significant contributions of companies with ties to Malaysia, such as the Carpenters Group and Shangri-La, and expressed support for their continued growth and new ventures entering the Fijian market.
