The Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, has announced Fiji’s intention to reopen its diplomatic mission in Kuala Lumpur. This announcement coincided with the celebrations for the nation’s 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day.
Ms. Qereqeretabua emphasized that the reopening is aimed at bolstering bilateral relations and expanding trade opportunities between Fiji and Malaysia. She stated, “Our High Commission in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, is re-opening soon,” although she did not disclose a precise timeline for the reopening. She noted that Kuala Lumpur would be pivotal for trade activities following the reopening.
In her remarks, she congratulated the government and citizens of Malaysia on their national day, recalling the long-standing relationship between the two nations, which dates back to times when Fiji provided support to Malaysia during challenging periods.
She mentioned the phrase “Bula Maleya,” highlighted by the Malaysian High Commissioner during his speech, as a testament to their enduring partnership. “The relationship between us and Malaysia is strong and healthy, and we are eager to learn from the development Malaysia has achieved,” she added.
Nor’Azam Mohd Idrus, the Malaysian High Commissioner to Fiji, noted the alignment between Malaysia’s “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka” initiative and Fiji’s focus on unity, patriotism, sustainability, and prosperity. He explained that this concept, introduced by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, highlights core values such as sustainability, innovation, and compassion.
Mr. Idrus reflected on the historical ties dating back to the 1950s during the Malayan Emergency, wherein 1,600 Fijians displayed remarkable bravery. He stated, “Their exceptional service formed the rock-solid foundation that cemented the unbreakable bond between Fiji and Malaysia.”
He also pointed out that Malaysia, as an open economy, values its business relations globally, including with Fiji. Notably, Malaysia is consistently one of Fiji’s top ten trading partners, a reflection of the robustness of their bilateral trade relations. He acknowledged the significant contributions of companies like the Carpenters Group, Spirit of Endeavour, and Shangri-La, expressing his support for their continued growth as well as welcoming new firms ready to establish themselves in Fiji.
