A new direct flight between Fiji and India is considered significant due to the shared cultural ties between the two nations. In an exclusive interview with Fiji One News, Fijian High Commissioner to India His Excellency Jagnath Sami highlighted the cultural, historical, and economic connections between Fiji and India. He expressed that the new air link will bolster collaboration in trade, tourism, and interpersonal relations.
With many Fijians having Indian ancestry, the direct route will greatly facilitate travel for Indo-Fijians, enriching personal relationships and reinforcing cultural ties. “The direct flight is very important. This will aid in promoting tourism. We also need to enhance our marketing efforts in India,” Sami remarked.
The High Commissioner expressed hope that the new flight would attract more direct investments from India into Fiji, particularly in technology, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors. “I believe more tourists from India will visit Fiji if we establish this flight,” Sami noted.
He also mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmakers and tour groups to promote Fiji as a destination on the global stage. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Prof Biman Prasad confirmed that negotiations are progressing to establish this air route with India.
“Everything is being considered; as I mentioned, our relationship is evolving, and we envision it becoming even stronger in the future,” Professor Prasad stated. He emphasized the importance of the relationship in light of recent comments made by the Prime Minister during the visit of India’s President two months ago, emphasizing how the ties between Fiji and India have strengthened over the past 18 months under the current government.
