Fiji and India Set to Soar: New Flight Promises Cultural and Economic Boost

A new direct flight between Fiji and India is seen as a significant development, given the cultural similarities shared by the two nations. In an exclusive interview with Fiji One News, Fijian High Commissioner to India, His Excellency Jagnath Sami, highlighted the strong cultural, historical, and economic connections between Fiji and India. He noted that the introduction of this air link would facilitate greater cooperation in trade, tourism, and interpersonal relationships.

With a substantial segment of Fiji’s population having Indian ancestry, this new route will simplify travel for Indo-Fijians, promoting personal connections and strengthening cultural ties. “The direct flight is crucial. This will enhance tourism. We also need to boost our marketing efforts here in India,” Sami remarked.

The High Commissioner expressed hope that the new flight would pave the way for increased direct investment from India into Fiji, particularly in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and renewable energy. “I anticipate that more tourists from India will visit Fiji once this route is established,” he added.

Sami also mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmakers and tour groups to present Fiji’s beauty to the global audience. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Prof Biman Prasad indicated that negotiations for the air route with India are progressing well. “Everything is on the table. As I mentioned, our relationship is evolving, and we expect it to grow significantly in the future,” Professor Prasad stated.

He further noted, “The Prime Minister has reiterated this commitment several times, especially during the visit of Her Excellency the Indian President two months ago, affirming the strengthening ties between Fiji and India over the past 18 months of our government.”
