Fiji and India Set to Soar: New Flight Opens Doors to Cultural and Economic Ties

A new direct flight between Fiji and India is gaining importance due to the cultural similarities shared by the two nations. In a recent interview with Fiji One News, His Excellency Jagnath Sami, Fijian High Commissioner to India, highlighted the strong cultural, historical, and economic ties that exist between the two countries. He noted that the new air link will significantly bolster trade, tourism, and interpersonal connections.

A substantial portion of Fiji’s population boasts Indian ancestry, and establishing a direct route will simplify travel for Indo-Fijians, thereby enhancing personal relationships and reinforcing cultural ties. Sami remarked, “The direct flight is crucial. This will promote tourism, and we need to enhance our marketing efforts here in India.”

The High Commissioner expressed hope that this flight will pave the way for increased direct investments from India into Fiji, particularly in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and renewable energy. He added, “I believe more tourists from India will visit Fiji if we establish this route.”

Additionally, Sami mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmakers and group tours to promote Fiji to a global audience. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Prof. Biman Prasad confirmed that negotiations to establish the air route with India are progressing well.

“All possibilities are being explored; as I mentioned, our relationship is evolving, and we anticipate a much stronger partnership in the future,” stated Professor Prasad. He referenced Prime Minister’s comments made during the Indian President’s visit two months ago, emphasizing the strengths in the Fiji-India relationship that have developed over the past 18 months.
