Fiji and India: New Flight Set to Strengthen Cultural and Economic Ties

A new direct flight route between Fiji and India is deemed significant due to their cultural connections. In an exclusive interview, Fijian High Commissioner to India, His Excellency Jagnath Sami, highlighted the historical, cultural, and economic relationships between the two nations. He noted that the air link would facilitate greater cooperation in trade, tourism, and personal interactions.

Many people in Fiji have Indian ancestry, and the new direct flight will provide easier travel for Indo-Fijians, fostering deeper cultural and personal ties. “The direct flight is very important for promoting tourism. We also need to enhance our marketing efforts here in India,” Sami stated.

The High Commissioner expressed hope that the new flight would encourage more direct investments from India into Fiji, particularly in technology, agriculture, and renewable energy sectors. “I believe that establishing this route will attract more tourists from India to Fiji,” he said.

Sami further mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmakers and tour groups to promote Fiji’s island beauty globally. In response, Deputy Prime Minister Prof Biman Prasad indicated that negotiations to establish the air route with India are progressing. “Everything is on the table. The relationship is developing, and we anticipate it will grow significantly in the future,” Professor Prasad remarked.

He added that Prime Minister has previously underscored the strengthening of Fiji-India relations, particularly after a visit from the Indian President two months ago.
