A new direct flight connecting Fiji and India is seen as significant due to their cultural similarities. In a recent interview with Fiji One News, Fijian High Commissioner to India, His Excellency Jagnath Sami, highlighted the cultural, historical, and economic connections between the two nations, asserting that this air link will strengthen cooperation in trade, tourism, and interpersonal relations.
Given that a considerable segment of Fiji’s population has Indian ancestry, the introduction of this direct route is expected to facilitate travel for Indo-Fijians, nurturing personal relationships and enhancing cultural ties. “The direct flight is very important. This will help in promoting tourism. We need to boost our marketing efforts here in India as well,” Sami stated.
The High Commissioner is optimistic that the flight will pave the way for increased direct investments from India into Fiji, particularly in sectors such as technology, agriculture, and renewable energy. “I believe more tourists from India will visit Fiji if we establish this route,” Sami remarked. He also mentioned ongoing discussions with filmmakers and group tour organizers to highlight Fiji as a travel destination.
In response, Deputy Prime Minister Professor Biman Prasad confirmed that negotiations to create the air route with India are progressing. “Everything is on the table. The relationship is evolving, and we anticipate it to grow significantly in the future,” said Professor Prasad. He noted that the Prime Minister has frequently addressed this topic, particularly during the recent visit of the Indian President, emphasizing the strengthening relationship between Fiji and India over the past 18 months.
