Helena McLeod, the Head of Delegation and Deputy Director-General at the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), recently held discussions with Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, during COP29 in Baku. The focus of their conversation was the strong partnership between Fiji and GGGI, underscoring their mutual dedication to advancing green growth and enhancing climate resilience.
Since GGGI established its first Pacific office in Fiji in 2015, their collaboration has thrived, firmly positioning Fiji as a regional frontrunner in sustainable development and climate action initiatives. GGGI has been instrumental in implementing diverse programs in Fiji, which include expanding rural electrification and improving green finance mechanisms. These efforts aim not only to promote environmental sustainability but also to spur economic growth.
Currently, GGGI operates across eight Pacific Island countries, with Fiji serving as a central hub for various regional green growth initiatives. The organization’s efforts are aimed at promoting the transition to renewable energy, boosting climate resilience, and encouraging sustainable development practices throughout the Pacific region.
During their meeting, McLeod and Professor Prasad discussed their ongoing collaboration and highlighted Fiji’s potential re-entry into the GGGI Council for the 2025-2026 term. This opportunity could enhance Fiji’s ability to represent the interests of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) on a global platform.
Looking to the future, GGGI is set to grow its presence in the Pacific, with plans to expand its local staff from 70 to 120 by 2026 and initiate over 30 new programs. These initiatives will tackle urgent topics such as sustainable infrastructure, climate finance mobilization, and climate adaptation, thereby enhancing both Fiji’s and its neighboring countries’ capability to manage climate-related challenges effectively.
GGGI expressed gratitude for the steadfast support from the Fijian government and its Ministry of Finance, recognizing that this commitment is crucial for achieving a sustainable and resilient future. As Fiji leads the way in climate action across the Pacific, its partnership with GGGI serves as a prime example of how collaborative efforts can foster significant progress towards a greener and more sustainable world.
This partnership not only highlights Fiji’s leadership but also emphasizes the importance of international collaboration in addressing global climate change. The commitment shown by both parties offers hope that united efforts can yield real and lasting change in the face of climate challenges.
