Fiji and Cuba: A Rising Alliance in Health and Diplomacy!

Fiji and Cuba are continuing to strengthen their cordial relationship, both in bilateral and multilateral areas. Kiti Temo, the Chief of Protocol from Fiji’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, conveyed heartfelt greetings to the Cuban government and its people on Cuba’s national day.

During her remarks, Temo recognized Cuba’s longstanding support for Fiji, notably through the establishment of medical scholarships benefiting both local and regional students. The partnership, which dates back to 2002 when diplomatic relations were first established, is marked by mutual respect and shared values, which include commitments to global justice and equality.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka attended the National Day celebration at the newly inaugurated Cuban Embassy in Fiji, joining diplomats and distinguished guests in honoring the occasion, celebrated annually on January 1st. This date symbolizes Cuba’s independence and national identity, making it a significant event for both nations.

The strengthening ties between Fiji and Cuba have also been highlighted in recent diplomatic discussions, such as meetings between Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the UN and the Cuban Deputy Minister for Foreign Relations. These discussions reaffirmed both countries’ dedication to peace, showcasing their commitment to enhancing bilateral ties consistent with Fiji’s “Oceans of Peace” initiative.

The ongoing cooperation between Fiji and Cuba in the healthcare sector reflects both nations’ aspirations for improved public health outcomes, as evidenced by the scholarships for Fijian students pursuing medical studies in Cuba. Currently, several students are on track to complete their education, thereby enriching Fiji’s healthcare capacity.

As both nations continue to support each other, there is a hopeful outlook for future collaborations aimed at addressing common challenges in healthcare and beyond, fostering a relationship that symbolizes positive diplomatic engagement and mutual benefit.
