Fiji and China’s Partnership: A Promising Future Ahead

China has emphasized the significance of Fiji as a key partner in the South Pacific region. During a meeting on Sunday in Beijing, Chinese Premier Li Qiang made this clear to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.

Li noted that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China. In response, Rabuka expressed that Fiji views China as a dependable ally, adhering to the one-China principle, and supports initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative.

Rabuka indicated Fiji’s eagerness to enhance collaboration with China across various sectors, including the economy, trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, aiming to unlock new opportunities for their bilateral relationship.

Li assured that China would steadfastly support the Fijian people on their chosen development path and is prepared to work with Fiji to fulfill the mutual agreements made by the leaders of both nations. He remarked that “China will continue to be true friends with Fiji, friends who trust and support each other,” and emphasized the importance of advancing the comprehensive strategic partnership for the benefit of both nations.

Li encouraged the two countries to capitalize on their complementary strengths, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation as part of the high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

He added that China plans to increase imports from Fiji and support Chinese companies in investing there. Additionally, Li expressed China’s commitment to assisting Pacific Island countries in adhering to the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and collaborating with Fiji and other island nations to further initiatives focused on global development, security, and civilization, ultimately aiming for a fair and balanced multipolar world alongside inclusive economic growth.
