Fiji and China: Strengthening Ties for a Brighter Future

China has identified Fiji as a key cooperation partner in the South Pacific region. This sentiment was emphasized by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during a meeting with Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing on Sunday.

Premier Li noted that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China. In response, Prime Minister Rabuka expressed Fiji’s view of China as a dependable partner, affirming their commitment to the one-China principle and support for initiatives such as the Belt and Road Initiative. He indicated Fiji’s readiness to enhance cooperation with China in areas such as trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, aiming to expand their bilateral partnership.

Li reaffirmed China’s unwavering support for the Fijian people in their pursuit of an independent development path, expressing a willingness to collaborate with Fiji to fulfill the mutual agreements reached between the leaders of their respective nations.

He stated, “China will continue to be true friends with Fiji, friends who trust and support each other.” Li emphasized the importance of strengthening exchanges and advancing the bilateral comprehensive strategic partnership to yield greater benefits for both nations.

Furthermore, the Premier called for both countries to capitalize on their respective strengths and deepen cooperation in sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation, all within the framework of high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

Li committed to increasing imports from Fiji and encouraged Chinese businesses to invest in the Fijian market. He also mentioned China’s backing for Pacific Island nations in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent and pledged close collaboration with Fiji and other island countries to advance various global initiatives aimed at fostering a fair and balanced multipolar world and promoting inclusive global economic growth.
