Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka held a significant meeting with His Excellency Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, in Beijing yesterday. This important discussion reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Fiji and China, which is built on shared goals and mutual respect, fostering a comprehensive strategic partnership.

Upon his arrival at the Great Hall of the People, Prime Minister Rabuka was welcomed by a 130-member honor guard consisting of members of the People’s Liberation Army. During the meeting, he expressed gratitude on behalf of the Fijian delegation for the warm hospitality extended by the Chinese government and its people, describing the experience as overwhelming.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the One China Policy, emphasizing its significance as the foundation of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He noted that China supported Fiji during challenging times when other traditional partners distanced themselves following events in 1987, 2000, and 2006.

The leaders discussed key areas of focus, including poverty alleviation and infrastructure development—both land and maritime—aligning with the Belt and Road Initiative and efforts for rural revitalization. PM Rabuka expressed Fiji’s intent to launch a comprehensive infrastructure development program in partnership with China to transform the nation’s infrastructure in the coming years.

He highlighted the positive impact of the Belt and Road Initiative, commending China for its assistance through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) in upgrading 82 kilometers of the Vanua Levu road network.

In terms of regional priorities, the Prime Minister reiterated Fiji’s commitment to regionalism, emphasizing the implementation of the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. This strategy aims to address shared challenges such as climate change, ocean conservation, and conflict resolution.

PM Rabuka recognized China’s support in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through the Global Development Initiative (GDI). In response, Premier Li reinforced China’s commitment to Fiji, especially in poverty alleviation and infrastructure development. He emphasized China’s commitment to enhancing cooperation through the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative and advancing the Global Development Initiative.

Premier Li expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister for the meeting and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the enduring relationship between China and Fiji.
