Fiji and China Forge Stronger Ties: What’s Next?

In Beijing, Premier Li Qiang of the People’s Republic of China met with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji to strengthen their comprehensive strategic partnership, rooted in mutual trust and respect. This meeting highlighted the enduring ties between Fiji and China, defined by shared objectives.

Prime Minister Rabuka was received with a guard of honor composed of 130 members of the People’s Liberation Army at the Great Hall of the People. He expressed his appreciation for the warm welcome and hospitality shown by China during the summit, recognizing the significant support Fiji has received from China since the shifts in alliances following events in 1987, 2000, and 2006.

Key topics discussed included the Belt and Road Initiative, rural revitalization, infrastructure development, and enhancing land and sea connectivity. Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s intent to collaborate with China on a comprehensive infrastructure development program aimed at transforming the nation’s infrastructure in the near future. He acknowledged the assistance from the China International Development Cooperation Agency (CIDCA) in improving 82 kilometers of the Vanua Levu road network.

On regional matters, Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s commitment to regionalism through the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, aiming to leverage its strengths in addressing climate change, ocean conservation, and conflict resolution. He closed by appreciating China’s role in supporting the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development via the Global Development Initiative (GDI), highlighting Fiji’s anticipation for continued support from China for a reformed multilateralism that promotes a more just global framework for small developing states.

In response, Premier Li confirmed China’s commitment to assisting in shared priorities, particularly in infrastructure and poverty alleviation. He reiterated China’s plan to actively advance the Global Development Initiative and deepen cooperation with Fiji through the ongoing Belt and Road Initiative. Li thanked Rabuka for the meeting and reaffirmed their mutual goal of enhancing the enduring partnership between their nations.
