Fiji and China: A Strategic Partnership in the Making?

In Beijing yesterday, Li Qiang, Premier of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China, held a meeting with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka of Fiji. This meeting marked a significant development in the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations, which is rooted in mutual trust and shared goals.

Prime Minister Rabuka was honored with a welcome by a 130-member guard of honor from the People’s Liberation Army at the Great Hall of the People. He expressed appreciation for the warm reception, thanking the Chinese government and its people for their hospitality during the summit.

Rabuka acknowledged the importance of the One China Policy in their diplomatic relations and expressed gratitude for China’s support during pivotal moments in Fiji’s history, particularly when traditional allies distanced themselves after events in 1987, 2000, and 2006.

The discussion centered on key topics including the Belt and Road Initiative, rural revitalization, infrastructure enhancement, and improving land and sea connectivity. Rabuka articulated Fiji’s desire to collaborate with China on an extensive infrastructure development program aimed at transforming the nation’s infrastructure in the near future.

He commended China for its role in aiding the upgrade of 82 kilometers of the road network on Vanua Levu, as well as recognizing the significance of the Belt and Road Initiative.

On regional issues, Rabuka committed to the principles of regionalism by unveiling the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, which aims to utilize Fiji’s strengths in tackling challenges such as climate change and ocean conservation.

Rabuka concluded by acknowledging China’s support in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development through the Global Development Initiative. He expressed hope for continued Chinese support for a reformed multilateral system that is more accountable and equitable for small developing states.

In response, Premier Li affirmed China’s commitment to ongoing assistance in shared areas of interest, particularly in infrastructure development and poverty alleviation. He highlighted China’s commitment to advancing the Global Development Initiative and strengthening collaboration with Fiji through the Belt and Road Initiative.

Li expressed appreciation for the meeting and reiterated the shared objective of enhancing the enduring partnership between China and Fiji.
