During a meeting in Beijing with Li Qiang, the premier of the State Council of China, Rabuka acknowledged China’s support for Fiji during challenging times after the political upheavals of 1987, 2000, and 2006.

The discussions between the two leaders focused on key areas such as poverty alleviation, infrastructure enhancement, including land and maritime connectivity, and initiatives related to the Belt and Road Initiative and rural revitalization. Rabuka emphasized Fiji’s aim to implement a robust infrastructure development program in collaboration with China, aiming to significantly improve the country’s infrastructure in the coming years.

He praised the assistance provided by the China International Development Cooperation Agency in upgrading the 82-kilometer Vanua Levu road network, highlighting its alignment with the Belt and Road Initiative.

Regarding regional priorities, Rabuka reiterated Fiji’s commitment to regional cooperation through the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent, which addresses challenges such as climate change, ocean preservation, and conflict resolution.

In response, Premier Li confirmed China’s ongoing support in shared areas of interest, particularly focusing on poverty alleviation and infrastructure development. He also noted China’s intention to enhance its collaboration with Fiji through the high-quality implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and the advancement of the Global Development Initiative.
