Fiji and China: A Partnership Poised for Expansion

China considers Fiji a vital partner in the South Pacific, as emphasized by Chinese Premier Li Qiang during his meeting with Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka in Beijing on Sunday.

Li noted that Fiji was the first Pacific Island nation to establish diplomatic relations with China. In response, Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s view of China as a trustworthy ally, highlighting the country’s commitment to the one-China principle and its support for the Belt and Road Initiative along with other collaborative efforts.

Rabuka expressed Fiji’s readiness to enhance cooperation with China across various sectors, including trade, infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, tourism, and connectivity, aiming to create new opportunities for their bilateral relationship.

Li assured that China will continue to support the Fijian people’s chosen development path and is eager to implement the agreements made between the two nations’ leaders. He stated, “China will remain a true friend to Fiji, fostering trust, support, and exchanges at all levels to advance the comprehensive strategic partnership and benefit both nations.”

Li also suggested that both countries capitalize on their complementary strengths to enhance cooperation in infrastructure, agriculture, fisheries, light industry, education, tourism, and poverty alleviation, all within the framework of high-quality Belt and Road collaboration.

Furthermore, he mentioned that China would increase imports of Fijian products and encourage Chinese enterprises to invest in Fiji. He also expressed China’s support for Pacific Island nations in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. China aims to work closely with Fiji and other island nations to advance the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, and Global Civilisation Initiative, all aimed at fostering a fair and balanced multipolar world and promoting inclusive global economic growth.
