The Chinese community in Fiji, along with dignitaries and local officials, convened at the Vineyard Palace in Suva on Sunday to celebrate the dual milestones of the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China and the Mid-Autumn Festival. This significant event highlighted the strengthening relationship between China and Fiji and the vital contributions of the Chinese community to Fijian society. China’s Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, provided insights into the collaboration between the Chinese government and Fiji, acknowledging the contributions of Fijians of Chinese descent to the local economy.
Mr. Zhou emphasized that the relationship between China and Fiji has grown since the establishment of diplomatic ties 49 years ago, evident in both economic and political spheres, as well as in daily life. He noted that a recent visit by Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka to China further strengthened these ties, resulting in various agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation. Zhou mentioned China’s commitment to its Pacific allies, including Fiji, reflected through substantial investments and development aid, contributing to economic growth through infrastructure projects.
Highlighting the Mid-Autumn Festival, Mr. Zhou described it as a significant cultural event in China, symbolizing family reunion and prosperity. This year’s celebration in Fiji served not only to honor this tradition but also to acknowledge the connection between Chinese culture and Fijian society. Dignitaries, including Fiji’s President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere and senior government ministers, attended the celebration, expressing gratitude for the contributions of the Chinese community.
Mr. Zhou noted that since the arrival of Chinese immigrants in 1855, the Chinese community has become an integral part of Fijian society, contributing to economic development and cultural enrichment. Initially engaged in agriculture and trade, the community’s involvement has expanded to various professions and sectors, including local businesses, education, and social services.
Moreover, the Chinese community has taken proactive steps to preserve their cultural heritage through celebrations of traditional festivals and educational initiatives. During crises, such as natural disasters and the COVID-19 pandemic, they have demonstrated support through donations and volunteer efforts, underscoring their commitment to the well-being of Fijian society.
In addition, Mr. Zhou marked the 75th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China as a time of considerable progress, highlighting achievements in poverty alleviation, infrastructure, and environmental protection. He pointed out that China’s commitment to global partnerships is evident in initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative, which aims to foster international cooperation.
Looking ahead, the ongoing collaboration between China and Fiji is anticipated to provide continued benefits in infrastructure, trade, and cultural exchange, especially as both nations prepare to commemorate the 50th anniversary of their diplomatic relations next year. Additionally, the 170th anniversary of Chinese presence in Fiji will serve as an opportunity to reflect on the historical contributions of the Chinese community and their lasting impact on Fijian society. This anniversary is expected to celebrate the achievements of the Chinese community and reaffirm the commitment to enhancing friendship between China and Fiji, promising a future filled with opportunities for mutual prosperity.
