Fiji and Australia Unite to Safeguard Workers’ Rights in New Labor Mobility Talks

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, met with Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald in Suva to reaffirm both governments’ dedication to enhancing work rights and welfare for Fijian workers involved in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Program.

During their discussions, the main objective was to strengthen the collaboration between Fiji and Australia concerning the PALM Program. They addressed serious allegations related to modern-day slavery, racism, bullying, excessive workloads, unjust termination, and unsafe working conditions that have emerged under the program. Minister Singh emphasized the importance of improving mechanisms to ensure compliance with labor standards.

In light of recent media claims, Fiji’s Country Liaison Officer (CLO) and the Department of Workplace Relations (DEWR) are conducting a thorough investigation, with full backing from the Australian High Commission. The High Commissioner confirmed that the investigation team will visit the workplace this weekend.

Minister Singh also mentioned that they discussed the possibility of appointing an additional CLO to be based in Queensland, as well as increasing travel allowances for current CLOs to better address the grievances of workers, particularly those in remote areas of Australia. The need for direct communication with the DEWR and having designated desk officers was highlighted as essential.

He expressed gratitude to the Fair Work Ombudsman for its efforts in ensuring equitable treatment and adherence to workplace standards. A ministerial visit to Australia is planned for October 2024, aiming to enhance the labor mobility program for the benefit of Fijian workers and achieve a mutually beneficial outcome for both nations. The High Commission will arrange a meeting with the new Minister responsible for the DEWR.
