Fiji and Australia Join Forces to Safeguard Workers’ Rights Under PALM Program

The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, met with Australian High Commissioner Ewen McDonald in Suva to reaffirm both governments’ dedication to enhancing work rights and welfare for Fijian workers participating in the Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) Program.

The crux of their discussion centered on strengthening cooperation between Fiji and Australia concerning the PALM Program. They addressed serious concerns related to modern-day slavery, racism, bullying, excessive workloads, unfair termination, and unsafe working conditions reported within the program. Minister Singh stressed the necessity to bolster mechanisms ensuring compliance with workplace standards.

Following media reports of these allegations, Fiji’s Country Liaison Officer (CLO) and the Department of Workplace Relations (DEWR) are conducting a thorough investigation, with full backing from the Australian High Commission. The High Commissioner indicated that the investigative team will be visiting the workplaces involved this weekend.

Additionally, Singh mentioned discussions about appointing an extra CLO in Queensland, Australia, and increasing travel allowances for existing CLOs to address workers’ grievances, particularly for those in remote regions. The need for direct communication with DEWR and dedicated desk officers was also highlighted to streamline contact.

Singh expressed gratitude towards the Fair Work Ombudsman for their role in ensuring fair treatment and adherence to workplace standards.

Plans are underway for a ministerial visit to Australia in October 2024 aimed at enhancing the labour mobility program, benefiting Fijian workers, and fostering advantageous outcomes for both nations. The High Commission will facilitate a meeting with the newly appointed Minister responsible for DEWR.
