Fiji Airways is advancing its commitment to sustainable aviation by announcing an expression of interest with Odys Aviation for the innovative runway-independent hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, known as ‘Laila’. This aircraft is designed in various configurations for cargo transport and boasts a range of 400 miles, which will facilitate connections between Fiji’s 330 islands.
The environmental impact of operating these aircraft is significant, as they will offer a low-carbon option for air cargo across the South Pacific. Additionally, the VTOL aircraft will enable new emergency medical routes that have been previously unreachable due to infrastructure limitations.
This collaboration will not only enhance Fiji Airways’ commercial operations but also pave the way for contracts with logistics and governmental bodies to aid non-governmental organization activities in the region.
Fiji Airways’ managing director and CEO, Andre Viljoen, emphasized that the hybrid VTOL aircraft aligns perfectly with the airline’s commitment to sustainable aviation. He mentioned that the partnership with Odys Aviation would fortify their mission to decrease aviation emissions and create a strategy for the future generation of travelers. “This partnership will do more than just expand Fiji Airways’ commercial operations for today; it will drive our investment in the future of travel and lifestyle for the people of Fiji as well,” stated Viljoen.
James Dorris, CEO and Co-Founder of Odys Aviation, expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership, stating that their approach focuses on delivering value that extends beyond just the aircraft. “We’re thrilled to announce this EOI as the start of our collaboration with Fiji Airways and we’re looking forward to working with their team, the local authorities and the people of Fiji to drive the transition to sustainable aviation, and to realize the benefits of a more connected ecosystem across the region,” he said.
Pilot programs using the VTOL aircraft are anticipated to begin in 2025.
