Fiji Airways Takes Flight with $504M Fuel Spend and Sustainability Goals

Fiji Airways revealed in its 2023 annual report, presented to Parliament, that it spent $504 million on fuel this year, an increase of 34 percent compared to 2022. The airline attributed this rise to higher fuel consumption driven by increased flying activity, combined with lower fuel prices and a stronger US dollar.

On August 26, 2023, Fiji Airways received its fourth Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which made its ferry flight from Singapore to Nadi using a blend of 30-40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), resulting in a carbon savings of approximately 46,768 kg (47 tons). The airline expressed pride in this milestone as a small island national carrier.

For the remainder of 2023, flights from Singapore to Nadi included a small SAF component of 2-3 percent. Fiji Airways emphasized that by adopting sustainable fuels, it and other airlines can significantly contribute to climate change mitigation.

Additionally, in 2023, Fiji Airways initiated various programs aimed at lessening its environmental footprint, such as planting one tree for every takeoff and landing, reducing single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling efforts. The airline’s commitment to sustainability aligns with the increasing demand from environmentally aware travelers.
