Fiji Airways Takes Flight Towards Sustainability Amid Rising Fuel Costs

Fiji Airways reported a significant expenditure of $504 million on fuel for the year 2023, marking a 34 percent increase compared to 2022, according to the company’s annual report presented in Parliament. The rise in fuel costs was attributed to higher consumption resulting from increased flight operations, lower fuel prices, and a stronger US dollar.

On August 26, 2023, Fiji Airways welcomed its fourth Airbus A350-900 aircraft, with the delivery flight from Singapore to Nadi utilizing a blend of 30-40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), achieving a carbon reduction of approximately 46,768 kilograms. The airline expressed pride in this milestone flight.

For the remainder of 2023, every flight from Singapore to Nadi incorporated a minor SAF component of 2-3 percent. Fiji Airways emphasized that the use of sustainable fuels allows airlines to significantly aid in combating climate change.

In addition, Fiji Airways introduced various initiatives in 2023 aimed at minimizing its environmental footprint, such as planting a tree for each take-off and landing, reducing single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling efforts. The airline highlighted its commitment to sustainability in response to the growing expectations of environmentally conscious travelers.
