Fiji Airways has reported a historic operating revenue of $1.8 billion for the year 2023, a significant achievement showcased in the Company’s Annual Report presented to Parliament last week.
Chairperson Nalin Patel noted that this figure represents the highest earnings in the airline’s 70-year history. The airline also attained an operational profit of $113.2 million, marking a notable recovery from a loss of $175 million in the previous year.
Patel highlighted the crucial role that Fiji Airways plays in the economic growth of Fiji, stating that the airline is responsible for transporting up to 70 percent of all visitors to the nation and is a major contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product. He emphasized that 2023 was a landmark year for the airline, with 2.2 million passengers carried, exceeding the 2 million mark for the first time.
The Chairperson attributed these positive results to strategic initiatives and the resilience of the national carrier. However, he acknowledged that 2024 may present more challenges and competition for both the airline and Fiji as a travel destination. Patel pointed to various factors that could impact operations, including economic uncertainties in key markets, global geopolitical tensions, intensified competition in the aviation sector, fluctuating fuel prices, inflation-driven costs, and the effects of a stronger US dollar. He concluded that the coming year is expected to differ significantly from 2023.
