Fiji Airways Sets Sail for the Future with Game-Changing VTOL Aircraft

Fiji Airways is set to enhance inter-island air travel in Fiji by collaborating with American company Odys’ Aviation, known for its advanced air travel technologies. The introduction of the hybrid VTOL (Vertical Take-Off and Landing) “Laila” aircraft is anticipated to begin early next year, making Fiji the first country in the Pacific to utilize these innovative aircraft.

Fiji Airways’ CEO Andre Viljoen highlighted that this initiative is part of the airline’s “nine game changer strategy” aimed at transforming access to Fiji’s maritime and outer islands. During a presentation at the recently concluded Fiji Tourism Convention 2024, Mr. Viljoen explained the significance of the hybrid VTOL aircraft.

“This aircraft is designed for vertical take-off and landing, which is particularly beneficial for many islands in Fiji that lack airport runways,” he noted. The aircraft lineup includes a smaller cargo version capable of carrying up to 100 kilos and operating like a drone, along with a larger nine-seater passenger variant that requires a captain and first officer.

Mr. Viljoen emphasized the potential for the larger aircraft to facilitate travel directly to hotels, showcasing the versatility and convenience of the new technology. “We are thrilled to be the launch partner with Odys’ Aviation,” he stated, expressing excitement about the opportunities the new aircraft will bring for deliveries and passenger transport across Fiji’s islands.
