Fiji Airways reported spending $504 million on fuel in 2023, marking a 34 percent increase compared to 2022, according to the airline’s annual report presented in Parliament on Friday. The airline attributed this rise to a combination of increased flight operations, lower fuel prices, and a stronger US dollar.
On August 26, 2023, Fiji Airways accepted its fourth Airbus A350-900 aircraft, which made its ferry flight from Singapore to Nadi using a blend of 30-40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), resulting in a carbon reduction of approximately 46,768 kg. The airline expressed pride in this milestone.
Throughout the rest of 2023, all flights from Singapore to Nadi incorporated a small SAF component of 2-3 percent. Fiji Airways emphasized that the adoption of sustainable fuels enables the airline and others to significantly support climate change mitigation efforts.
In 2023, Fiji Airways also initiated various environmental initiatives, including planting a tree for every takeoff and landing, minimizing single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling programs. The airline stated that its commitment to sustainability aligns with the increasing demand from environmentally conscious travelers.
