A Fiji Airways flight bound for Singapore was diverted to Cairns yesterday after a passenger aboard required urgent medical attention, the national carrier confirmed. Flight FJ363, which departed Nadi for Singapore, made an unscheduled landing in northern Australia where emergency services met the aircraft and the ill passenger was transferred to hospital for further treatment.
In a statement, Fiji Airways said the affected guest received immediate care from cabin crew and a doctor who was travelling on the flight. The aircraft landed safely in Cairns, where paramedics boarded to take over care and convey the passenger to a nearby medical facility. The airline did not provide further details on the passenger’s identity or condition.
After the medical transfer, the aircraft was cleared to continue its journey. Fiji Airways said FJ363 departed Cairns at 3:45am local time and is now scheduled to arrive in Singapore at 8:21am local time. Passengers onboard were thanked by the carrier for their understanding during the unexpected diversion.
“The safety and wellbeing of our guests and crew remains our highest priority,” the airline said in its statement, adding that crew had provided immediate assistance while a doctor onboard helped stabilise the situation until emergency services could take over on the ground. The airline did not comment on any knock-on effects to the crew roster or whether any passengers chose to disembark in Cairns.
The diversion comes amid a period in which Fiji Airways has faced other schedule disruptions, including flight cancellations and delays reported in recent months. However, the carrier emphasised this event was a medical emergency that required an unscheduled landing and on-ground medical support, rather than an operational or weather-related disturbance.
Fiji Airways has not released further updates on the hospital transfer or the patient’s condition. The airline advised that passengers affected by the diversion were assisted at the time and that the remainder of the journey proceeded once the aircraft was able to depart Cairns.
Local authorities in Cairns assisted at the scene following the aircraft’s arrival. Medical diversions such as this are handled through coordination between crew, medical professionals onboard when available, airline operations teams and ground emergency responders — a process the carrier said was executed swiftly in this instance to ensure the passenger received prompt care.
