Fiji Airways has announced a significant step towards sustainable aviation by signing an expression of interest with Odys Aviation for its hybrid vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, called ‘Laila.’

The ‘Laila’ aircraft is designed for various configurations suitable for cargo and boasts a range of 400 miles, allowing it to connect Fiji’s 330 islands. This initiative is expected to provide a low-carbon air cargo alternative for routes across the South Pacific and create new emergency medical routes that were previously hindered by infrastructure limitations.

Moreover, incorporating Odys Aviation’s aircraft will enable Fiji Airways to expand its commercial opportunities and forge partnerships with logistics and government agencies, thereby enhancing NGO operations in the region.

Fiji Airways’ Managing Director and CEO, Andre Viljoen, emphasized that the hybrid VTOL aircraft aligns perfectly with the airline’s commitment to sustainable aviation. He highlighted that the partnership with Odys Aviation would enhance efforts to lower aviation emissions and create a pathway for serving the next generation of travelers.

“This partnership will do more than just expand Fiji Airways’ commercial operations for today; it will drive our investment in the future of travel and lifestyle for the people of Fiji as well,” Viljoen remarked.

James Dorris, CEO and Co-Founder of Odys Aviation, expressed excitement over the collaboration, emphasizing a commitment to delivering value beyond aircraft through partnerships with customers and local communities.

“We’re thrilled to announce this EOI as the start of our collaboration with Fiji Airways and we’re looking forward to working with their team, the local authorities, and the people of Fiji to drive the transition to sustainable aviation,” Dorris stated.

Pilot programs utilizing the aircraft are anticipated to begin in 2025.
