Fiji Airways is advancing its commitment to sustainable aviation by announcing a new partnership with Odys Aviation for its hybrid vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) aircraft known as ‘Laila.’
The ‘Laila’ aircraft is versatile, capable of transporting cargo with a range of 400 miles, which is expected to effectively connect the 330 islands of Fiji. This initiative aims to minimize environmental impact, providing a low-carbon air cargo option for various routes across the South Pacific, while also creating new emergency medical service routes that were previously limited due to infrastructure issues.
Additionally, the integration of Odys’ Laila aircraft into Fiji Airways’ fleet will enhance the airline’s commercial capabilities, potentially leading to contracts with logistics and governmental organizations to support non-governmental organization (NGO) operations throughout the region.
Fiji Airways’ managing director and CEO, Andre Viljoen, emphasized that this hybrid VTOL project aligns with the airline’s dedication to sustainable aviation practices. He noted that the partnership with Odys Aviation would not only reduce aviation emissions but also help establish a roadmap for catering to future travelers.
“This partnership will do more than just expand Fiji Airways’ commercial operations for today; it will drive our investment in the future of travel and lifestyle for the people of Fiji as well,” Viljoen stated.
James Dorris, CEO and Co-Founder of Odys Aviation, expressed excitement about the collaboration, aiming to provide value to the regions in which they operate, not just through their aircraft but also by enhancing regional connectivity.
“We’re thrilled to announce this EOI as the start of our collaboration with Fiji Airways and we’re looking forward to working with their team, the local authorities, and the people of Fiji to drive the transition to sustainable aviation,” he remarked.
Pilot programs utilizing the new aircraft are anticipated to begin in 2025.
