The Fiji Airways Aviation Academy has been highlighted as a vital training center and a symbol of opportunity for Fijians, especially women who have historically been underrepresented in the aviation industry, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. During the unveiling of two new flight simulators and additional full flight training devices at the academy, Mr. Rabuka noted that the institution offers world-class training for local talent.
“Fiji Airways consistently raises the standard not only in aviation but also demonstrates a strong commitment to our people,” Mr. Rabuka stated. He emphasized that the academy serves as a crucial opportunity for Fijians, particularly women, and called its establishment a transformative step for the nation.
Mr. Rabuka also pointed out that Fiji Airways is responsible for bringing in approximately 65 to 70 percent of all visitors to Fiji, and its global marketing efforts surpass those of any other entity promoting Fijian tourism. He mentioned that these new simulators would improve regional connectivity and bolster support for the economies of neighboring Pacific Island nations.
Fiji Airways’ managing director and CEO, Andre Viljoen, remarked that the addition of these new simulators and training devices marks a significant advancement for the aviation academy. He declared, “We are now fully self-sufficient.” Reflecting on past investments, he revealed that the initial phase involved two full flight simulators in 2020, with the second phase requiring a $75 million investment, bringing the total investment to $160 million, including the original $85 million from phase one in 2020.
