The Fiji Airways Aviation Academy has been described as a vital source of opportunity for Fijians, especially women who have traditionally seen limited representation in the aviation industry, according to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka. During the inauguration of two new flight simulators and two full flight training devices at the academy, Rabuka emphasized the academy’s role in providing top-tier training for locals.
“Fiji Airways continues to excel, not just in aviation but also through its dedication to our people,” Rabuka noted. He further stated, “This academy serves as a beacon of opportunity for Fijians, especially for women who have faced challenges in the aviation sector. The establishment of this facility in Fiji is revolutionary.”
Rabuka highlighted the significant contribution Fiji Airways makes to tourism, bringing in approximately 65 to 70 percent of all visitors to the country. He remarked that the airline’s global marketing efforts are unmatched in promoting Fijian tourism.
He added that the newly introduced simulators would improve regional connectivity, enhancing services and fostering economic support for fellow Pacific Island nations.
Fiji Airways’ managing director and CEO, Andre Viljoen, regarded the addition of the new simulators and training devices as a major advancement for the academy. “We are now completely self-sufficient,” he affirmed.
Viljoen explained that the academy’s first phase commenced in 2020 with the addition of two full flight simulators. The investment for the current phase amounts to $75 million, which, combined with the initial $85 million investment from phase one, signifies a total expenditure of $160 million.
