Fiji Airways Aviation Academy (FJAA) is proving to be a significant asset for Fiji Airways, saving the airline over $10 million annually in training expenses. This information was disclosed by Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Andre Viljoen in the airline’s 2023 annual report presented to Parliament recently.

Viljoen noted that the FJAA, which features full-flight simulators for Airbus A330 and Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, has transformed the airline’s training operations since its launch three years ago. The academy has not only improved capabilities in pilot certification and career progression but has also generated considerable revenue from third-party training. All pilot competency and promotional training is conducted locally, contributing to substantial savings, reduced training timelines, and improved pilot proficiency.

The cost savings have enabled Fiji Airways to invest more capital back into critical areas, boosting overall efficiency and performance. In 2023, the second phase of the academy’s expansion commenced, with $49 million allocated. The total estimated cost for this expansion is projected to be $130 million and includes the purchase of an Airbus A350 full-flight simulator and an ATR full-flight simulator.

Viljoen emphasized that the FJAA is essential for the future development of national pilots, stating that since receiving approval for type ratings, Fiji Airways has completed 62 promotions for national pilots, with more courses underway. Additionally, the academy highlights the airline’s commitment to gender diversity, boasting a team featuring 15 female pilots, which showcases a focus on inclusion within the aviation field.

Prior to the academy’s establishment, Fiji Airways crew members were required to travel to various countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand, for their training. Now, the academy has earned a strong reputation and continues to attract interest from international airlines.
