Fiji Airways’ Academy: A $22.7 Million Game-Changer

The Fiji Airways Aviation Academy (FJAA) has achieved significant savings of over $10 million annually in training expenses for Fiji Airways. This information was disclosed by Andre Viljoen, the managing director and chief executive officer of Fiji Airways, during the presentation of the airline’s 2023 annual report to Parliament.

Viljoen noted that the FJAA, which features full-flight simulators for Airbus A330 and Boeing 737 MAX, has transformed training practices since it opened three years ago. The academy has improved the company’s capabilities in pilot certification, type rating, and career progression, and is also generating considerable revenue from third-party training. All pilot training is now conducted locally, leading to savings of more than $10 million in training costs, reduced training timelines, and improved pilot competency standards.

He highlighted that these savings enable the airline to reinvest in other crucial operational areas, enhancing overall efficiency and performance. Phase two of the academy’s expansion is currently underway, with $49 million allocated for 2023. The total cost of the expansion is projected to reach $130 million and will include the purchase of an Airbus A350 full-flight simulator and an ATR full-flight simulator.

Viljoen emphasized the academy’s importance for national pilot development, noting that since gaining approval for type ratings, Fiji Airways has completed 62 promotional advancements for pilots, with more training courses scheduled.

Additionally, the FJAA has become a model for gender sensitivity, with its training team now comprising 15 female pilots, reflecting the airline’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in the workforce. Viljoen pointed out that this initiative not only enhances the team but also sets a positive standard within the aviation industry.

Before the academy was established, Fiji Airways personnel had to go overseas for training in locations such as Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and Thailand. Now, the academy has gained recognition and is attracting considerable interest from international airlines.
