Fiji Airways’ $504M Fuel Surge: What’s Driving This Change?

Fiji Airways reported expenditures of $504 million on fuel in 2023, marking a 34 percent increase compared to 2022, according to the airline’s annual report submitted to Parliament on Friday. The company attributed this rise to higher consumption driven by increased flight operations, lower fuel prices, and a stronger US dollar.

On August 26, 2023, Fiji Airways received its fourth Airbus A350-900 aircraft, and the flight from Singapore to Nadi utilized a blend of 30-40 percent sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), resulting in a carbon savings of approximately 46,768 kg (47 tonnes). The airline expressed pride in this milestone, highlighting its significance for a small island national carrier.

Throughout the remainder of 2023, flights from Singapore to Nadi included a small SAF component of 2-3 percent. Fiji Airways emphasized that by adopting sustainable fuels, both it and other airlines can play a crucial role in combating climate change.

In 2023, Fiji Airways also introduced various initiatives aimed at minimizing its environmental footprint, such as planting one tree for every takeoff and landing, reducing the use of single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling efforts. The airline noted that its commitment to sustainability aligns with the increasing expectations of environmentally conscious travelers.
