Fiji Airports Takes Flight with Solar Sustainability Revolution

Fiji Airports has made significant strides in promoting sustainability by installing solar-powered supply and lighting systems at Nadi International Airport and four other major domestic airports. This initiative is part of broader sustainability efforts aimed at minimizing carbon footprints across their facilities.

CEO Mesake Nawari emphasized the alignment of this project with Fiji’s transition to cleaner energy sources, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and reduce operational costs. “Our commitment to sustainability reflects our recognition of the critical impact of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases on climate change, and the urgent need for action,” Nawari stated.

The installations include a 33-kilowatt hybrid solar system at Nadi that powers 14 electric vehicles (EVs) acquired last year. Additionally, solar panels have been fitted at airports in Labasa, Savusavu, Matei, and Rotuma as part of the environmental development project. The transition to solar power is essential since using fossil fuel-dependent electricity for EV charging undermines the sustainability goals, according to Nawari.

Streetlights at the airport compound have also been converted to operate on solar energy, further extending the benefits of the solar initiative. The ongoing solar farm project, which aims to develop a 3.5 megawatt solar capacity, is expected to significantly boost renewable energy generation at the airport.

These advancements are part of Fiji Airports’ commitment toward achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, aligning with global green airport initiatives. The collaboration with ITP Renewables Australia further illustrates their dedication to this vision, marking a substantial step in their journey to becoming a leader in sustainable aviation.

The continuous investment in renewable energy and electric vehicles positions Fiji Airports as a trailblazer in environmental sustainability within the aviation sector, contributing positively to both local communities and global climate goals.

This commitment not only showcases Fiji’s ambition towards sustainable practices but also acts as a valuable example for other airports in the Blue Pacific region, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions in tackling climate change.
