Fiji Airports Charges Ahead with Electric Fleet Expansion

Fiji Airports has established itself as the owner of the largest electric vehicle fleet in the region with the recent addition of nine new electric vehicles (EVs) to its existing fleet of 13 EVs, making a total of 22 vehicles this year. Chief Executive Mesake Nawari highlighted that the shift towards electric mobility is gaining momentum globally, particularly in the aviation sector, which significantly contributes to carbon emissions worldwide.

Nawari expressed that the goal is to eventually utilize 100 percent renewable energy, noting that this initial step marks a commitment to utilize more clean energy in operations, especially with plans for a solar farm in the future. He described the acquisition as a major move towards reducing the airport’s carbon footprint and enhancing green spaces.

At a recent Fiji Day luncheon in Nadi, the Fiji Airports Board officially handed over keys to the new Volkswagen EVs to nine managers. This initiative positions Fiji Airports as a leader in the transition to sustainable transportation in the region.

“Fiji Airports is dedicated to driving our Green Airport initiatives, aiming for long-term environmental benefits through various activities,” Nawari stated. He emphasized the importance of significantly lowering carbon emissions to improve not just the airport’s environment but also the surrounding community.

Palas Auto Services, the local distributor of the EVs, noted that embracing new technology can be challenging; however, electric vehicles represent a transformative shift in the automotive industry and align with the Fijian Government’s Green Initiatives. By choosing BYD, a prominent global player in new energy vehicles and the third-largest automotive brand worldwide, Fiji Airports is aligning itself with a leading manufacturer in the EV sector.

The introduction of these electric vehicles is a key component of Fiji Airports’ strategic objectives outlined in its business plan, which includes sustainability efforts such as transitioning to solar power, waste management and recycling, eliminating plastic use, implementing electric vehicle use, and engaging in practices like tree planting and biodiversity maintenance.
