The Fiji AFL men’s team is gearing up for a challenging tournament at the 2024 Pacific Cup, taking place on the Sunshine Coast in Australia from tomorrow until the 24th of this month. With a revitalized squad and weeks dedicated to training, Fiji is ready to confront top teams in the Pacific, notably stronger competitors like Papua New Guinea (PNG) and New Zealand.

Team captain Isimeli Naqaravatu Qiolevu is leading the charge, bringing confidence to his teammates as they prepare for their opening match against PNG, followed closely by a game against New Zealand. Qiolevu noted the players’ enthusiasm: “The training was alright, and the boys are really looking forward to it. Preparation was alright, and we put our focus on our first game against PNG.”

The tournament places a high value on speed, discipline, and teamwork, and the Fiji team is determined to stay focused and maintain their faith on the field. Qiolevu emphasized the significance of unity and trust among his teammates, stating, “Just keep our heads up, have faith in God, and let God do the rest for us.” The team is predominantly young, featuring many players under the age of 29, including their youngest member, just 18 years old, who serves as the head boy from Marist Brothers High School.

This year’s Pacific Cup goes beyond just vying for regional dominance; it serves as essential preparation for the AFL International Cup, which is set to take place next year.

In summary, the Fiji AFL men’s team is enthusiastic and well-prepared for the Pacific Cup, with a youthful roster and a strong sense of unity as they head into a competitive and important tournament for their future in AFL on the international stage. This opportunity not only showcases their commitment to the sport but also builds a foundation for aspirations on a larger platform.
