Fighting Gender-Based Violence: A Call for Collective Action

Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection Lynda Tabuya emphasized that addressing gender-based violence requires a comprehensive approach involving the entire government and society. Her comments came in response to independent MP Rinesh Sharma’s inquiry about the ministry’s actions to support victims of gender-based violence.

Sharma highlighted alarming statistics from the Fiji police, noting a 35 percent increase in crimes against women in June and a 39 percent rise in July. He also referenced tragic incidents, including the death of a young woman in a ferris wheel accident and injuries sustained by a child at the Hibiscus Festival, raising concerns about the current situation despite ongoing discussions about future improvements.

Tabuya acknowledged that the statistics indicating that two out of three women experience violence in their lifetime have remained static over the past decade, suggesting a need for improved strategies. She pointed out that while previous governments have not successfully addressed these statistics, there is now a national action plan focused on preventing violence before it occurs.

The minister noted the significance of addressing the root causes of gender-based violence, particularly patriarchy. She shared that traditional leaders have begun to unite to tackle this issue, marking a positive shift in discussion around gender-based violence in Fiji.

Tabuya emphasized the importance of education, advocating for the integration of values-based education into the curriculum to teach children about gender-based violence and foster healthy relationships. She expressed a commitment to strengthening the health system’s role in supporting victims and educating the public about prevention.

Additionally, she highlighted the necessity of involving men and boys in conversations about combatting gender-based violence, ensuring they are part of the solution. As part of the national action plan, a survey will be conducted to inform a public communication campaign focused on violence prevention. Tabuya expressed gratitude to the Australian Government for its support in implementing these initiatives, which are set to continue over the next two and a half years.
