Fighting Back: A Call to Arms Against Fiji’s Drug Crisis

President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on Naitasiri paramount chief, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take strong measures to safeguard his community from the escalating illicit drug crisis. He expressed alarm over the rising drug usage nationwide.

Ratu Wiliame addressed the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held at Tamavua Village in Suva yesterday. He emphasized the necessity for collective efforts to improve the province, stating that the community must join forces with the youth to tackle the social challenges plaguing society.

He noted the harmful impacts of drug abuse on the younger generation and expressed his deep concern for both present and future generations. Ratu Wiliame urged for unity among the community and the church in ensuring the safety and well-being of children.

He stressed the importance of reinforcing cultural values within families and the community so that children learn to respect their elders. He also encouraged those youths who have left school to pursue education in technical schools, as this could help them address social challenges and contribute to community development.

Ratu Wiliame urged the community not to cast blame but to take responsibility for confronting the issue. He highlighted the need for a detailed village profile initiative to assist the government in delivering targeted support to the people of Naitasiri.

Furthermore, he called on the residents to combat Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by adopting healthier dietary practices. He pointed out that NCDs are responsible for 80 percent of deaths and encouraged the community to reflect on the traditional lifestyles and diets of their ancestors, advocating for the consumption of homegrown food.
