Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an increasing risk to global health and this issue is being actively addressed in Fiji. The National Antimicrobial Resistance Committee has been organizing World AMR Awareness Week since 2015, and this year the observance runs from November 18 to November 24.
The focus of this week highlights the critical need for awareness regarding AMR, alongside the importance of proper hygiene practices and vaccinations—lessons underscored by the experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, Chief Medical Advisor of Fiji’s Health Ministry, launched AMR Week in Labasa and emphasized that AMR threatens not only the advancements in modern medicine but also directly endangers lives today.
Dr. Cikamatana pointed out Fiji’s proactive stance with the implementation of the National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance, which is now in its second edition. This plan defines essential goals and encourages cooperation among various health sectors.
She urged the public to heed advice from healthcare professionals regarding antibiotic use, to refrain from sharing prescriptions, and to avoid requesting antibiotics when they are unnecessary. Dr. Cikamatana called for a unified approach across all sectors—human, animal, and environmental health—to combat AMR and safeguard both local and global health.
Through education, advocacy, and concerted actions, Fiji has the potential to make a significant contribution to a healthier future for everyone.
This week’s activities underscore the global seriousness of AMR while also highlighting Fiji’s commitment to tackling such critical health challenges, offering a collaborative path forward that can lead to positive outcomes in public health management.
For further engagement, individuals are encouraged to participate in local initiatives aimed at promoting awareness and best practices related to AMR during this important week.
