Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) Commissioner, Barbara Malimali, emphasized the Commission’s vital role in ensuring justice concerning corruption during remarks made to staff at the FICAC headquarters in Suva, coinciding with Fiji Day celebrations.
Malimali highlighted this year’s celebration theme, “To heal and hope,” which reflects Fiji’s multicultural unity and tolerance. She remarked on the pride felt by Fijians as they celebrate their heritage and acknowledge the efforts that have shaped their nation.
She noted that while civil servants are actively engaged in community cleaning efforts across Fiji, FICAC’s mission is to rid the nation of corruption, stating, “Whilst FICAC may not be physically cleaning the streets, we are cleaning the nation of corruption.”
Reflecting on the challenges Fiji has faced, from political unrest to natural disasters, Malimali reinforced the resilience of the Fijian people and the spirit of solidarity that characterizes their response to adversity.
She praised her staff for their commitment to promoting transparency and accountability and urged them to enhance their productivity in achieving the Commission’s vision of a corruption-free Fiji. Malimali reminded her team that they are well-resourced and that the expectations of the people of Fiji are high. She encouraged them to rise above criticism, unite, and demonstrate FICAC’s crucial role in maintaining the balance of justice.
